And Then the Dancing Unicorns Come Out to Play! Saturday, Mar 31 2007

Rick Moran comments extensively on more wishful thinking coming out of the left: a “What If Al Gore Had Won the 2000 Election” piece of fantasy. How does it all come about?

December 1, 2000: After a night on the town and too much lobster in champagne sauce, Sandra Day O’Connor has a horrifically vivid dream of how the ascension of George W. Bush to the Oval Office would mean the destruction of the American economy, the senseless deaths of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, the loss of American prestige both at home and abroad, and — worst of all — the utter dissolution of her beloved Republican Party as, upon being deserted by even the corporate media, it suffers a series of definitive electoral ass-kickings in 2006, 2008, and 2010 before giving up the ghost.

So the speculation is not based on the a twist in election process, but on a Supreme Court Associate Justice’s dinner and the bad dream she had because of it.

It’s not the first time I’ve encountered the “If Gore had won we’d be as safe as houses, the mean terrorists wouldn’t have flown planes into buildings, there would be no fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, we’d all get subsidies to buy hybrid cars, everyone in the world would love – just loooovve – us, our recycling bins would get so full that we’d have to put them out every day, communities would gather together every night and sing Kum-By-Yah, and dancing unicorns would come out to play at sunset” meme. Someone whose opinions I respect always brings it up, and all I can do is roll my eyes and skip over the paragraphs containing it.

I want to scream, “Let. It. Go. People! Focus on finding electable candidates instead of getting stitched up in your fantasies and Hate Bush Derangement! That is so two years ago. And once this guy leaves office, and if another Republican is elected, what the hell are you going to do then?”

Again, I ask: why do they always refer to themselves as the “reality-based” community?

Rap-Up Your Taxes This Year Saturday, Mar 31 2007

A band here in Louisville named The Accountants (yes, they are all CPAs who have a side gig as a rock band that plays original music – see this story about them, and this review of their latest CD) has an entry in the Turbo Tax video contest posted at YouTube.

Click here to see it. Enjoy it. And if you like it, vote for it. They’ll get cool, valuable prizes if they win, like a lifetime supply of Turtle Wax and Rice-a-Roni (The San Francisco Treat), an inflatable hot tub, a book of hamburger coupons, and a ticket for one free pony ride.

Constancy of Purpose Saturday, Mar 31 2007

The man who knows what’s right and is tenacious
In the knowledge of what he knows cannot be shaken,
Not by people righteously impassioned In a wrong cause, and not by menancings

Of tyrants frowns, nor by the wind that roils
. . .the sky could fall
In pieces around him, he would not quail.

–Horace, Ode iii.3, “The Constancy of Purpose”

In memoriam, Cpl. Chris Mason, and others who had that constancy.
